The Fix has been planning several panels for the 2022 International Journalism Festival since last year, months before the war in Ukraine started. After the Russian invasion, the original topics had to change. Here you can find all the talks and panels with The Fix on them.

Modelling the business under repression

Daryna Shevchenko, CEO The Kyiv Independent and The Fix co-founder, was a guest in a panel hosted by the International Press Institute. Together with Veronika Munk, the founding editor-in-chief of Telex, the largest independent digital news outlet in Hungary and Siddharth Varadarajan, the founder-editor of The Wire, India’s largest independent digital news and analysis platform.

Ukraine media crisis response: lessons and challenges ahead

Jakub Parusinski, co-founder and editor of The Fix, together with Gaygysyz Geldiyev, senior partner Jnomics Media, and Mariia Leonova talked about the aftermath of the Russian invasion in Ukraine and how they formed a coalition with other organisations to start a crowdfunding campaign to support media outlets in Ukraine.

The presentation focused on the practical aspects of responding to the crisis and activities being carried in support for Ukrainian media, including emergency funding, war-time PPE logistics, leveraging crypto, managing communications, operational and tech support.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: how local journalists are telling the story for their communities and the world

Daryna Shevchenko was also on a panel organized in association with Thomson Foundation where journalists working in Ukraine’s regional cities shared their experiences of reporting on a story that affects them personally, their own families and friends.

Life in exile: how migrations, war and revolution are impacting CEE media

The discussion focused on Central and Eastern European media (CEE region), especially on Ukraine and Belarus, and how the Russian invasion has impacted the ongoing changes – independent journalism, sustainability, new business models and new media initiatives.
